The first post...

These are always interesting, the first posts to new blogs. I've never been that great at using sites other than Livejournal, but I want something where I don't feel obligated to write every single day and to keep an audience interested in my life. This blog is for me, though I won't throw out anyone who tries to read it! :)

I recently started realizing that we need to save more money. My husband and I have tried budgeting, but never see it through. I remember buying The Tightwad Gazette II in hopes of getting some tips, and I did, but I never followed any of them in my every day life. But now things have to change. We need a college fund for our son, we need a retirement fund for ourselves (other than the 401k). As of now I've done a few things, starting with simplifying our belongings. We're moving to a different apartment in a couple of weeks and I want it to be a completely fresh start. I have Freecycled some of our things, and others I've sold on Craigslist. I also recently put some things up in a local free publication that puts up free ads to sell people's things. Hopefully that will help me sell some of the other things I need to get rid of.

As I do that I'm doing other good things. I switched many of our lightbulbs to CFLs. My husband is skeptic, but hopefully he'll understand after he sees the savings on our next bill! I also did great on groceries today! I only spent $64 (for about 2-ish weeks of food) compared to our normal $105-120 (for about a week to a week and a half). And it wasn't junk, which is always one of my biggest concerns. Also, out of the $64, I was able to pay $20 by cashing in the change we had in our change jar which was nice.

I guess that's all for today, I'll update as much as I can but I don't have steady internet access so I'll do what I can.
